Bostonian Auster Ambulance
The boxy shape of the Auster Ambulance lends itself well to conversion to a cartoony Bostonian
model - a bit of longitudinal squashing gave the required minimum fuselage box size. The wingspan
was then drastically reduced to 16", resulting in the rather cute model you see here.
It turned out to be a really nice flyer, though performance is limited by the weight - 27 grams including the motor (two loops of 0.080"). Compare this to my Sortasenator which weighs only 19 grams. Still, the Ambulance will easily do 30 seconds in our small hall at Trinity School and can be trimmed to fly safely in quite a tight circuit.
The pod and boom design of the Ambulance means that the rear upper fuselage is assembled separately on top
of F10 and then later attached to the box fuselage. The rear fuselage door is added last, made from light 1/32" sheet. Do the sides first, then add the bottom and sand the excess from the corners. I used Martin Dilly's Japanese tissue to cover the model.
The real aircraft had just the one colour scheme with a few variations over its life - light grey with red markings. At one point it carried RAF roundels and serials (XA177) over this scheme. My model was airbrushed with light grey enamel with the markings cut from painted decal sheet.
The plan is on three A3 sheets.
